The Manitoulin Island Drum and Dance Troupe consists of many accomplished Singers and Dancers from all over Manitoulin Island who regularly travel the "Pow Wow trail". Not only entertaining, but authentic in their Native way of learning, teaching, sharing, and having fun, the Troupe performs some of the best championship style songs and dances of our people.
This well known performing group has performed in concert with Kashtin. They began singing and dancing over 25 years ago at Pow Wows and different gatherings. It is their belief that these songs and dances should be kept and practiced.
All members on the drum sing and are formers dancers in both traditional and contemporary styles. They sing the Honour Song, Eagle Song, Hoop Dance, Round Dance, Two Step, and the Pipe Song.
Gordie Odjig is the Dance Troupe Leader, Master of Ceremonies as well as Dancer and Drummer. He is responsible for explaining each dance style that is performed. Dance styles featured include Women's and Men's Traditional, Jingle Dress, Men's Grass, Women's Fancy Shawl, Men's Fancy Feather, and championship style Hoop Dancing. Spectators are involved with activities to ensure a fun and rewarding experience.
