Man of Many Talents

Indian Guide; Gordie Odjig offers a series of weekly activities designed to provide visitors with an interactive experience of the region’s First Nations’ cultures. Demonstrations by participating artists and craftspeople, a mini-performance by De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Company and a buffet of traditional Native foods can be arranged.

The activities will be taking place from May 1 until October 30.

Gordie works with the seven First Nation communities on Manitoulin Island and Sagamok First Nation on the North Shore. By offering visitors at these destinations a chance to experience cultural events and activities first-hand, the organizers hope to promote mutual understanding and a new level of cultural sharing.

The weekly schedual begins with the Mother Earth Walk. Led by a local guide, participants will learn to identify plants used in traditional medicines and cookery. There are points of historical interest and ample photo opportunities along the route.

At Bebamikwe Studios in Wikwemikong visitors will experience: Graphic Design Through Native Eyes”. On this tour of an Aboriginal-owned graphic printing operation guests will learn about local woodland design and motifs and create their own keepsake.

At Zaawmiknaang’s in Wikwemikong, visitors will learn how to mix and cook their own bannock over an open fire while listening to stories and local legends.

A tour of the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation (OCF) continues with an exploration of local culture through stories and local legends.

A short walking tour and sampling of natural herb tea. A traditional Native Feast evening offers guests a chance to sample local fish, wild game meats, berries and wild rice.

In wikwemikong hoop dance teachings by Gordie Odjig, a skilled teacher who has instructed several world champion hoop dancers. Mr. Odjig, along with one of his students will give you an awe-inspiring demonstration of what it takes to be a hoop dancer.
